HÓZHÓ
A Design for Living
Inspired by the historic Germantown weaving that once greeted visitors
to the Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893, grandmother
Rose Yazzie’s (left) contemporary Germantown Eyedazzler (below)
transforms itself according to the viewer’s perspective. Up
close, its busy checkerboard of seemingly random motifs and colors
becomes a pattern of crisscrossing diagonals as one draws further
back. Not until one draws still further back, does an even larger
pattern of diamonds and triangles emerge, resolving itself into
the overall design. Her award-winning masterworks embody Hozho,
health, happiness. and the harmonious balance of all things that
is the highest goal of artistic weaving, and of Navajo life itself.
